From my personal experience, I really know that stigma is a hindrance. Yet I never had to make such harsh experiences as some of the people in the video at the end of this text. Stigma can make me feel shy when I get in touch with people who aren’t affected by any mental illness or do not work in a job that is somehow related to the topic. I know there are many people who really have little or no idea of what it means having to live with a mental illness. They hear lots of crazy stories, and indeed, the media does its part when pointing out that the “killer” was mentally ill. In fact, it is known that:
One can say that stigma is formed by not knowing, misinformation and prejudice. There’s also another form of stigma that is really hurtful and hard to tackle: self-stigma.
